Another instance of Table Talk
So, in looking at Jamie Gold and the way he basically talked himself out of losing another $150k, which is definitely his only obvious poker talent, annoying as it is, I remembered a pretty strange instance of table talk that happened at a home game I go to a while back.
Basically, two players ended up in a huge hand after calling another player’s all-in preflop. They were playing heads up on a flop of A Q 10. Player 1 was new to the game, and no one knew his style very well, and he didn’t know ours, so he was kind of playing in the dark.
Player 2, a rather unpredictable player who usually has something big when he gets in a big hand, bet out a decent amount in regards to the flop. Both players’ stacks were still pretty deep. After the bet, Player 1 came over the top all in.
So Player 2 is sitting there thinking. He says he has a huge hand and doesn’t think he can lay it down. This is where Player 1 turns on the juice. He basically tells Player 2 in a very earnest and friendly seeming way that he has a monster and that he doesn’t want to bust Player 2 for all his money and knock him out, that he’s letting Player 2 know that he’s behind and he should fold, and that he’s going to see the hand anyway since another player is all-in. His speech seems actually genuine and friendly, and no one could expect the new player to be putting a move on in this spot.
Player 2 still sits and agonizes over the call for a long time and finally ends up tossing his hand away face-up, showing Q 10 for two pair.
Player 1 then has to turn up his cards, showing Ace six, for top pair, crap kicker.
Player 2 loses it and storms out.
Basically, Player 1 said later that he’d thought he could make Player 2 fold by the move, but when he realized he might get called he had to do the only thing he could think of to win. It was a risky shot, to use ‘friendly play’ as a way to knock the better hand out, but under the circumstances I thought it was a pretty interesting move, especially since he’d already gotten stuck in the pot.
Gold, though, he just sounds like such a whiny goober going on and on.
I guess whatever you have to do, you do.

Typically, the reverse of what some one is saying/acting is the truth.
At least that is what most of the poker books/pros tell you.
Jamie on the other hand tells the truth quite frequently and people don’t believe him.
He says “i’m beat if you got XXX”. Which makes the person think he’s goading me into a call because he has a monster. I better play it safe.
Jamie told the truth during that HIgh Stakes Poker hand with Sammy. He told him that he was beat if Sammy had aces.
But sammy was scared that he had a set of 10’s or something else and didn’t bet the river.
Table talk can work if you can do it right.
