Chip Reese Dead at 56
Early Tuesday morning poker superstar Chip Reese was found dead in his bed by his son at his Las Vegas home. He was 56 years old. He’d been suffering from symptoms of pneumonia, and died quietly, while sleeping.
Reese was a 3-time WSOP bracelet holder, including the 2005 HORSE event that many players consider the ultimate achievement in poker. Though he wasn’t quite as well known as the more boisterous and spotlight driven players, he was well known among true students of poker and players in the big game, where Reese was known to decimate his opponents. Some say he might have been the biggest cash game money winner ever.
Reese had dropped out of Stanford University earlier in his career to pursue his burgeoning ability at cards.
His early exploits in business with longtime partner Doyle Brunson marked a willingness to do anything he set his mind to. “We went to look for the Titanic. We went to look for Noah’s Ark. We were two of the biggest suckers whenever it came to business, but we both had poker to fall back on,” Brunson said. “Thank God we could play, so we always survived.”
Reese is survived by a daughter and step-daughter. He had recently divorced his wife.
Services will be held Friday in Las Vegas.
