Daniel Negreanu on Heads Up

by Blake on February 19th, 2008

Via Daniel’s blog;

“Ideally you want to be the aggressor heads up, but if your opponent pushes the envelope to the point where they are uber-aggressive, you can actually beat them by sitting back a little bit and playing a more solid game- hoping they’ll make a big mistake.

My approach is pretty simple. I min raise on the button a high percentage of the time and I rarely re-raise from the big blind. On the flop, I bet 50% of the pot a high percentage of the time. There is one other strategy adjustment that I do make, but it’s not something I can share as it gives away too much info.

I can understand why people make it 3x on the button, but I think it’s a mistake against most good players. I think 2x on the button is more profitable heads up. At the NBC Heads Up this year, I’ll be making it 2x until the blinds get up there and I’m forced to either limp or push.”

I pretty much agree with this strategy. Getting too many chips in preflop when heads up if you aren’t going to be all in is often more prospective than skill-oriented. I like a slow heads up game, and it’s especially great when a guy is pushing you too hard, because it’s very easy to wait and catch him slipping. Heads up I think is poker at its finest. More a skill game than most other forms, though still involving more luck than, say, chess.

1 opinion for Daniel Negreanu on Heads Up

    Negreanu always leaves something to mystery when he discusses strategy. It is an effective marketing tool though.

    Now I want to watch him at the NBC Heads Up Championship and try to discern what this special tactic is that can’t be divulged to the public.

    Heads up is a differnt game altogether. I agree with Daniel’s play (who am I to argue) but I tend to play head’s up a little more aggressive.

    I try to gain a slight advantage in chips before I go all in. This puts the other player in a little tougher decision when they know it is for their tourney life.
