How long can a cold spell last?

by Blake on October 11th, 2008

I’ve been chilling out on my poker game for about a year now, playing only once or twice every month when I randomly feel the burst of inspiration that the cold streak I’ve been playing under for at least this last year will get shaken off. Over the course of an average 6 hour session, I’ve been lucky to make 1 or 2 ‘big’ hands (big being anything more than two pair), not counting the ‘big hands’ I do get that get sucked out on, which also seems to happen more frequently than it used to, and with the game I play at, guys will call down most anything, so bluffing isn’t really profitable for the most part: you need a hand of some sort, but the upside is that when you do make those hands you usually get paid.

It’s kind of broken my spirits some, though, to keep playing at these games and walk away usually just even (I sometimes come up a little but most often I break even) after watching tons of money flying around and thinking, Jeez can I at least get some suited connectors to see a flop with?

J2, J3, J4 all night for hours will make you want to put the game down like no other.

Anyway, last night was pretty much another node in this chain of events, and after a year of frustration, I am trying to talk myself into believing that the end of the blur is near.

I’ve heard Daniel Negreanu talk about having yearlong cold streaks, and the fickle nature of the game, and so I guess hearing a guy like that feeling the same it makes it more bearable, but in the meantime I guess I’ll just keep sitting through the hours hoping that my luck will pick up, and that those big hands I do finally catch don’t get cracked.
