Idea for Tournament Structure

by Blake on June 29th, 2008

So, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the nature of luck in poker, and how it’s such a delicate line between the right move and the wrong move, and all arbitrary in the eyes of the cards being able to turn around those with a minuscule chance to win into the big champ.

What if there was a poker tournament in which all the players experienced the same queue of cards. A randomly generated series of hole cards, flops, turns, rivers, that would be gone through in a queue by each player heads up against a computer, without any knowledge of other players’ experience of the hands.

Each player would start with an amount of chips and the winner could be determined either by who has the most chips after a certain amount of time (bustouts eliminated), or who lasts the longest going into the queue (everyone sees the same cards so there is no variance in bad beats, etc.) or some other variation of the idea.

I think this would much more reliably define who is the most skilled as everyone would see the same experience, like in say a video game, you can only get so far, and with the hands still being randomly administered, there would be no ‘design’ element to the players experience of the game.

Just an idea, but I think it makes sense.

Consider it copyrighted.

    Blake,

There is a website that does this. I forget the name. I will find it for you.

You are playing against the same seats that you are sitting at. all the players get the same cards.

The “winner” is determined by who makes more money then his/her counterparts at the other tables.

It is an interesting concept. I have been meaning to go and try it but forgot the website until you just now brought it up.

I would def like to see this, I think it makes much more sense as to determining who is ‘best’ in ’skill’

Please do let me know if you find it

    :)

    Thanks Jereme

I am not sure if this is the original website I had read about. But it is the same gist.
