Lesson of the Day: Raise

by Blake on June 8th, 2008

Most of the time in poker, no one makes a hand. Even when they do make a hand, such as top pair, a significant bet can put most players in the fear (that is, if they are capable of acknowledging that their paired King with a Jack kicker can be crushed by such a wide range, which a surprising # of players aren’t, especially online).

That’s why so often ‘representing’ a hand can win pots, as long as you don’t try it enough to become obvious. A strong table image with well-timed raises in the right spots will get you respect, and using that respect will make up for any dearth of cards or what have you. More often than not, they will have a hand they can get away from.

Of course, this is just a profile idea, and blind raising with crap can just as easily get you stuck if you aren’t reading well, and if you don’t have the extra chips for leeway.

Or you could just be Phil Ivey. That works too.

All I can say is wow! Great play by Ivey as usual but saying that betting $30k to him would be like me bluffing with $2 I’d imagine.

Heh, I have been known to make plays like that.

You look like a genius when they work and look like a complete and utter donk when they don’t.

yeah its a lot easier to bluff when it doesnt matter in the slightest whether you win or lose except to make you look cool.

yeah, the genius/donk line is so arbitrary, it’s kind of annoying.
