Pretty ridiculous claim obviously, and doubtful that it would actually work if you WERE dumb enough to send them money.

This is silly. More money could be gained by using such a system rather then selling it.
However, the scenario isn’t extremely far fetched. A cryptography expert could crack it if they had enough time and access to the code.
A more likey scenario would be to create a malware application that logs a persons hole cards and sends them to you at a remote computer.
So in theory, if I could figure out how to get the software on a poker pro’s computer (say Gus Hansen),wait for him to hit the high stakes table at FTP, play it right and take the guy for as much money as possible over a length of time.
This latter theory would be very easy to accomplish. An intermediate knowledge of software programming could accomplish this.
I would not be surprised if the company who sent that spam is doing this to the people who pay them for their secrets.
Scenario:
Player pays ripoff company.
Ripoff company instructs the player to install it’s special software.
Special software does not appear to work for the player.
Ripoff company tells him there are no guarantees and breaks formal communication.
Ripoff company can now track the players online poker use and see his hole cards.
etc.
