Poker Tipping

by Blake on March 26th, 2008

Interesting article on CardPlayer today about tipping in poker, the main argument centering over whether dealers should be tipped for dealing WSOP tournaments.

I’ve always been a pretty above-average poker tipper. You see a lot of guys who just rake their pots, thinking they already lost money to the rake, but these dealers are working hard and deserve a buck or two from pots. There’s just no reason not to.

With something as long and time-consuming as the WSOP too, and with players not really raking cash pots but supposedly tipping out of their winnings at the end, I think it makes a little sense that they take something out for the dealers. But I can also understand the weird clammy feeling that leaves in players knowing that they have a chunk cut out of their buy in.

It’s not fair though, that dealers could (and often do) do all that work and get nothing for it just because a guy decides he doesn’t need to give out 1 or 2% of his six figure take to the dealer just for ‘throwing cards around.’ You can never really expect too much from human nature when it comes to compulsory money giving.

Not sure which way I stand on this one. Thoughts?

I concur with the sentiment that the dealers should get money. Not tipping is a crappy act but I think that you will find more people who tip then do not tip.

I disagree with the sense of entitlement that any one in the service seems to have when it comes to tip money.

I do not have to tip. I tip because you did a mediocre to excellent job and your tip will reflect that. Forcing people to tip is disgusting. I should not be forced to perform an act because society dictates that you are a “bad” person for not tipping. That is just silly.

The real issue here isn’t player tipping (or the lack of it. The real issue is that the casinos and the WSOP/WPT/etc. are not paying their employees at a reasonable wage.

I did the math and the WSOP main event (just the main event) generated 2.6 million in revenue for the “hosue”.

2.6 million freaking dollars for what? Scheduling, floorspace and the most important part: dealing.

This figure does NOT include the additional 1.8% held for “tournament staff”.

Exactly where is the 2.6 million going if it is not to tournament staff?

I love to see the overall “house” take from the entire WSOP series and the percentage of that money paid to dealers.

I’m guessing it’s going to be about 5% and I think i’m being generous here.

It shouldn’t be the responsibility of players putting up money (and losing money) to pay additional monies because dealers are not compensated well..

you are right. i agree completely. thank you for clearing my haze.

dealers should get paid a lot more to put up with what they put up with.
