Sick sick beats
In league with my recent thinking on bad beats, here are two of the more nasty ones seen lately on High Stakes Poker.
I’ve gotten pretty sick of watch the all-in fests of televised poker lately: even with the pro shows like Poker Superstars and etc. you don’t get to see a lot of good post-flop play. High Stakes is by far the most interesting show from a learning standpoint as you get to see real, hand-to-hand deliberation without the want of trying to run people off for their tournaments stacks.
This first beat is just one of the classic nightmares of having to put it all in without having seen any of the community cards. Sam Farha knows he’s beat here. He knows he’s putting in all his money as a 6-1 dog against Barry Greenstein. Yet he can’t get away from the KK. And he gets paid. You see this all the time, particularly in the aggro-bet land of online poker, but this one just aches, especially since Barry declines to run it twice, being a poker purist.
This second beat is a little less sick in my mind as both players have huge post-flop hands and it would be hard for either to get away. In fact the majority of the money goes in after the 1-outer suck out, so I almost have to fault Daniel Negreanu here for, like Farha above, putting all his money in when he knows he’s beat, even with such a huge hand. Usually he’s very good and calling other players’ hands, and here he knows the three pocket holdings that can beat him, and he still puts in 150K. I think I would have folded in his spot. You can’t put Gus on anything less than a full house, and Daniel has the worst one. Yes he’s Gus Hansen. Yes he’s known to be reckless. But really I think here you just have to give him credit for the hand. He wouldn’t go in with a straight. He *probably* wouldn’t go in a stone bluff, considering Daniel’s action, though that’s the option I’m sure Daniel had to guess. He could have gotten away from this without losing as much as he did, and then go on to play other hands. But the dude is paid. He doesn’t even really shudder after losing six figures with a boat.
Either way, it hurts in the crotch just a little bit watching this one.
