WSOP Final Table

by Blake on October 10th, 2007

Watched the last two hours of the final table of 2007 WSOP last night. I must say, it was probably the most boring and routine televised poker event I’ve ever seen. And to know that it was all changed by what’s his name folding QQ after the flop of 3 5 8 to the most aggressive guy at the table, who’d been making awful plays the whole tournament, it made my skin crawl just a bit. I was surprised to see Lee Watkinson go out so quickly and with a weak ace, but I realize it was probably hard to put Jerry Yang on a decent hand, especially blind against blind, though it was also apparent he was going to call down most any bet.

The grossest part of the whole thing was when Jerry kept praising God once he was in a big pot, begging that Jesus (and not meaning Chris Ferguson) come and show the world His miracle by helping Jerry Yang win the pot. “Show him your light, Jesus! Show him your work in my life!” in broken English. He wasn’t kidding. His small foreign family smiled and clapped behind him and looked up with crying eyes at God. Maybe Jerry did have God’s help. I don’t know how else he would have hit all those hands. It was just rather frightening to watch the Lord invoked and people shaking. I wish he’d lapsed into tongues. Then he would have quaded up for sure.

Worst world champ yet. I didn’t think we’d ever surpass Jamie Gold’s goober machismo.

‘Cause we all know God picks sides, right? ;-) I’ve often wondered what happens when two or more opponents invoke the Lord. Do you think he’s like, “I’m blessing you, and you, but NOT you, not today.”

It is a shame that he did not go up against an islamic fundamentalist.

now that would have made for some good tv.
